The primary objective of casing/liner operations is to successfully run and cement a string of casing/liner capable of meeting the specified pressure test and service requirements. The success of the operations will depend on the following:

  • pre-planning, co-ordination, job execution
  • casing and liner condition
  • pressure tests, calculations and running measurements
  • hole and mud conditions.
  • cement slurry design

Purpose of casing

  • serve as an anchor for the BOP stack thus permitting safe well control of formation pressure
  • Surface casing takes some of the load of the wellhead from the subsequent casing strings
  • Prevents collapse of the upper wellbore during drilling
  • Increases the pressure rating of the hole with respect to higher pressures at greater depth
  • To case off depleted zones
  • Hydraulically isolates the wellbore fluids from the subsurface formations and formations fluids (i.e. time reacting troublesome formations)
  • Minimises damage to both the surface and subsurface environment by the drilling process.
  • Provides a high strength flow conduit for the drilling fluid to surface.

Purpose of Liner

Liners are suspended from the bottom of the previous casing and do not extend to the surface. Thus they are less expensive than a full string of casing.

Drilling Liner

  • isolate troublesome formations to allow further drilling.

Production Liner

  • Set through the production zone
  • Connected to the wellhead using a tie-back casing string when the well is completed
  • Is an economic method of extending casing to the production zone without the running the string back to the surface
  • Use of production liners with the tie-back casing strings results in lower hanging weight in the upper part of the well and are thus more economical.
